There are a number of reasons why a tooth may need to be removed from the mouth. Dental extractions are most commonly needed if the teeth are decayed, or fractured beyond repair. The most common need to extract teeth include:
Extreme tooth decay that is too costly to repair vs. a restoration with a Dental Implant or a Dental Bridge
Severe bone loss from advanced Periodontal disease causes tooth mobility and infection.
A tooth may be extracted if it is preventing other teeth from erupting.
Orthodontic treatment often requires the need for room for the teeth that are being moved into place and may require extraction of one or several teeth to make treatment successful.
Wisdom teeth are often extracted either due to infection or pain, or as a preventive procedure.
At our office we offer several options in order to make your dental extraction comfortable. Nitrous Oxide Sedation can be used to decrease anxiety associated with extraction of teeth. We can also make a referral for General/IV sedation anesthesia if you wish to be completely put out for the procedure. Most dental extractions can be done with just local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and most patients are able to return to work shortly after. After the procedure we may also choose to place bone graft in the tooth socket in order to preserve the bone for future implant restoration or to prevent further bone loss in the jaw bone.
