MICHAEL MAZAHERI, DDS
Dental sealants are the most effective way to prevent development of cavities in teeth. Children and young adults are more prone to tooth decay due to their food choices and poor oral hygiene habits.
Dr. Mazaheri recommends dental sealants for any age as they are superior in protecting teeth against decay-causing bacteria. Sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the posterior teeth where decay occurs most often. The procedure is fast, simple, and more importantly its pain-free.
How are Dental Sealants Placed?
After the surface is thoroughly cleaned with a prophy paste and rotating brush the tooth is washed with water and dried. Then a solution conditioner is applied on the fissured (groove) area of the tooth’s chewing surface for a number of seconds before being rinsed off. This creates small microscopic areas where it enable the dental sealant to adhere to the tooth. After the tooth is dried again, the liquid dental sealant is placed on the tooth and hardened by a special curing light. Once the dental sealant has hardened it becomes a hard plastic varnish coating, and the patient can chew on the tooth again.
How Long Sealants Last?
Dental sealants have been used and have been proven to be effective since the 70s. Dental sealants can last many years. Should sealants fracture it is easy to repair or replace.
