Why Are The Baby Teeth Important?

The maintenance of baby teeth is very important in order to retain the health of primary teeth. Neglected cavities can sometimes lead to problems which affect developing permanent teeth. Baby teeth are important not only for chewing and eating but also to provide space and guidance for the eruption of permanent teeth. Since the front teeth are not lost until until 6-7 years of age, and the back teeth aren’t replaced until age 10-13 it is important to preserve and maintain the primary teeth by regular dental checkups.

Dental Emergency Tips

Toothache: Clean the area and rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water and use dental floss to remove any food that may be trapped in between the effected tooth. Contact your dentist as soon as possible and please do not place aspirin on the aching tooth as you can get what's known as aspirin burn.

Knocked Out (avulsed) Permanent Tooth: Handle the avulsed tooth carefully by the crown, and rinse the tooth with distilled water or milk. DO NOT clean with soap, or scrub the tooth. Inspect the tooth for racks and if sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. If not able to place back in the socket you may transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk. Please give us a call ASAP as time is a critical factor to saving the tooth.

Knocked Out Baby Tooth: Contact us for an appointment. This is not usually an emergency, and in most cases, no treatment may be necessary.

Children and Teeth Grinding At Night? (Bruxism)

The most common question we get from parents is about their child grinding his/her teeth at night. The parent may notice short or fractured edge of anterior teeth. One of the most common causes of this condition might arise from psychological stress. Stress from new environment, changes at school, family relations can influence a child to grind his teeth. Majority of pediatric teeth grinding cases do not need any treatment and the child will usually outgrow this habit. Pediatric bruxism habit decreases between ages of 6-9 and will stop by age of 9-12.
